History

The Department of Geology and Mineral Sciences, University of Ilorin focused mainly on teaching and research targeting towards training the young students to become competent professional geologist and explorationist who will be able to stand and practice on their own. The Bachelor of Science degree in Geology and Mineral Science runs for four years for those that did UTME and three years for the Direct entery.

Right from the beginning of their training (100/200 Level), several geoscience courses and other related courses would be offered by the students. As they progress, students are exposed to the basic knowledge of geoscience including rock types and compositions, mineral deposit, earth structure. Students are also introduced to both theory and practical (laboratory and fieldwork) exercises from the beginning of their training till they graduated. Students are exposed to geological fieldwork to learn rudiments of field studies: measurements of strike and dip, identification of structures including fold and faults etc.
